Please read the first chapter about independent reading, answer the questions after each reading, and keep a reading journal. Keeping reading journal is the best way to make reading permanent.

1. Independent Reading (자율독서)
One of the best ways to improve reading is independent reading. Independent reading is individuals' reading of text — such as books, magazines, and newspapers — on their own, with minimal to no assistance from others. It can consist of reading done in or out of school, including purely voluntary reading for enjoyment or assigned reading for homework.
To encourage independent reading, I encourage 5-4-3-2-1 count-down strategies
5: Summarize the story (or any composition) in 5 sentences.
4: Write about 4 interesting facts (or characters).
3: Find 3 quotes and write their significances (speaker, occasion, context, meaning).
2: Find 2 rhetorical devices and their functions.
1: Find 1 symbol and its meaning.
